Two Mountain Winery is a family affair. Owned and operated by brothers Matthew and Patrick Rawn, our family has been farming the rich soil in the Rattlesnake Hills area of Washington State’s Yakima Valley for more than half a century. In 1951, our grandfather Phil Schmidt established Schmidt Orchards with 40 acres of peaches, apricots, prunes, and apples. We planted Copeland Vineyard in 2000 with our uncle, Ron Schmidt, and crushed our first vintage in 2002. Today, three generations contribute their talents and expertise to Two Mountain Winery and our 26-acre estate vineyard.
Matthew Rawn – Winemaker, Director of Sales and Marketing
Matthew Rawn has been winemaker for Two Mountain Winery since its inception. He helped plant the estate vineyard with his uncle Ron Schmidt in 2000 and has produced Two Mountain’s wines since the first vintage in 2002. While the vineyard was developing, Matt honed his winemaking skills by working alongside neighboring Yakima Valley wine producers and learning their craft. A passionate advocate for the Washington wine industry, Matt manages sales and marketing for the winery and enjoys talking with wine retailers and restaurateurs about the state’s world-class wines. Matt graduated in agricultural business from Montana State University in Bozeman and has completed courses at the enology and viticulture, at Walla Walla Community College in Walla Walla, Washington.
Patrick Rawn – General Manager, Vineyard Operations
Patrick Rawn manages finances and daily operations for Two Mountain Winery and Copeland Vineyard and shares vineyard management duties with his brother, Matt. After completing college, Patrick traveled the globe and spent extensive time in Europe. He returned to the U.S. with plans to enter law school, but a six-month stint working for the family wine business took his career path in a new direction. Patrick’s passion for wine blossomed at Two Mountain Winery and quickly grew into a full-fledged love affair. Patrick truly believes in the potential of the Yakima Valley and Washington State as whole, serving as a Yakima County Planning Commissioner, a member of the Yakima County Wine Tourism Consortium as well as a sitting on the board for the Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers. Patrick holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science with a focus in economics/international finance from the University of Washington in Seattle.
Two Mountain Winery “Wine Dog” Bios
Bentley (Basset Hound) Bentley is a ladies man who has a soft spot for kids. A handsome devil, Bentley is two feet tall with an ample belly, kind eyes and mile-long ears. He can be found sauntering around the winery looking for attention, snacks, shade, sun and small rodents or cats (fortunately, he’s never caught them). He loves to stretch out on the cool concrete in the tasting room and lay immobile for long periods of time.
Gus (Yellow Lab, light coat)- Gus is an equal opportunity lover – men, women, kids – whomever is willing to shower him with affection. Gus is a total clown who always needs to be the center of attention and will make a ruckus if he feels ignored. He constantly needs to be touched and will lie on his back for a belly scratch or rub up against visitors’ legs until he gets a well-deserved pet. An unfortunate run-in with a car has left Gus with a hip injury , but don’t be fooled – he has a strange tendency to limp when guests are around and then quickly shake it off when he wants to play outside. It is suspected Gus might be part pig as he has never found a mud puddle he hasn’t liked.
Rudy (Yellow Lab, reddish coat) - Rudy is a bit more anti-social and generally does not seek out attention, but he is a gentle soul and fiercely loyal. He can generally be found behind the tasting bar or on his dog bed keeping a watchful eye on tasting room activity. Rudy loves to be “at work” in the vineyards and is happiest trotting alongside Matt and Patrick or riding in the back of the truck with the wind in his fur.
Stoli (Yellow Lab/Bernese Mountain Dog mix)- Stoli is the youngest and newest addition to the Two Mountain crew. Although he is not related to the other two labs, he has definitely mastered the role of younger brother. Stoli still has a lot of puppy in his Shetland Pony-sized body and has learned plenty of tricks from Gus about how to woo tasting room visitors. He loves riding in the truck almost as much as Rudy, but Stoli is by far the smiliest after a fun-filled day of chasing sage rats in the vineyard.
